Diamonds Are the North's Best Friend

Diamonds were recently discovered in the Canadian Arctic. Now, diamonds are a billion-dollar export - making Canada the third largest diamond producing country in the world.

The first discovery was in 1991, and until recently, almost all of the diamond exploration was in the Northwest Territories. The search has now widened to include Nunavut.

Between 1998 and 2002, Canadian companies mined about 13.8 million carats of diamonds - a nice haul worth about $2,800,000,000! (CAD) This would be about a 1.5 kg / 3.3 lb bag of diamonds each and every day for five years - with each bag valued at $1,500,000.

Apparently there's more than one type of "ice" that comes out of the Arctic.
