Martin Frobisher: Arctic Gold!

Martin Frobisher (1539-1594) was one of the first explorers to search for the Northwest Passage. On the first of three voyages, he sailed around Baffin Island and discovered an inlet (Frobisher Bay) that he believed was the way to the Orient.

His encounters with the local Inuit were not friendly - likely due to his possessive attitude. There were violent encounters and Frobisher returned to England with an Inuit captive.

Frobisher also brought back ore that he identified as gold, and set off the first "gold rush" to the New World. The ore was later determined to contain only worthless iron pyrite or "fools gold", and Frobisher narrowly escaped going to prison.
