![]() Race Around the North Pole The North Pole Marathon is a race run over 26.2 miles / 42 km of frozen Arctic pack ice with only about 14 feet / 4 meters of ice separating the runners from 12,000 feet / 3,650 meters of icy Arctic Ocean.
This is one of the world's most extreme races, and the only marathon race in the world that is not run on any land. Runners make their way to Longyearbyen, which is situated in the Svalbard Islands (Spitsbergen) off the north coast of Norway. From there, they are flown by an Antonov plane to the Russian North Pole Camp, called Borneo, drifting on the ice at the "top of the world".
