Fact for November 2

"We've Got Elbow Room!"

The territory of Nunavut ("noo-na-voot") is one of the most sparsely populated places on Earth. Covering a vast area of 1,900,000 sq. km / 750,000 sq. miles - about 1/5 the area of Canada - it has a population of only 30,000. (By comparison, Mexico is the same size in area, but has a population of 105,000,000!)

The Inuit form the foundation of the territories culture and represent about 85% of a population that is not only one of the youngest in Canada, but also the fastest growing - although there doesn't seem to be any concern for overcrowding at this point.

Twenty-six communities representing four languages (Inuktitut, Inuinaqtun, English and French) range all the way from tiny Bathurst Inlet (population 25) to Iqaluit (the capital) with almost 6000 people.
