Arctic Eco-Destination

"Ecotourism" - travel to areas for the purpose of observing the land and wildlife and learning about the environment - may well become the top tourist fad of the 21st century, and the Arctic is an ideal "eco-destination".

Today, people seem more interested in seeing whales, seals and other Arctic birds and animals in their natural surroundings than in hunting them to extinction.

This type of tourism is encouraged in the Arctic, but if such activities are to continue, they have to take into account not only the business interests of those involved, but also the impact on the natural and cultural environment of the destination.

Ecotourism activities are usually nature-based, small scale (operating with small groups), contributors to nature conservation, and actively involved in a beneficial way with the local communities.

While ecotourism is almost always nature-based tourism, by far not all nature-based tourism is ecotourism!
